SuperFan: Wild Card Weekend (1/6/09)

It’s All Part of the Plan…

            By SuperFan

I get it.  It would’ve been really nice if the Vikings beat the Eagles so we’d be playing the Cardinals this Sunday.  That didn’t happen.  When the Eagles first won, I had several brief moments of worrying.  The Eagles are a very scary team to be playing right now.  And in many cases they are in a similar position the Gmen were in at this point last season.  BUT DON’T START SAYING THEY’RE THIS YEAR’S GIANTS!! Let them win at least one more playoff game before everyone begins crowning them as this year’s sneaky sally.

My worrying only lasted those several brief moments.  Then it hit me – these are the defending world champion New York Giants.  Bring it on, Philly!  No way Spags (if this is his last season) will let his former team end our season.  No way the Giants will lose at home to the Eagles twice in the same season!  Especially when the next match-up is a PLAYOFF GAME!!  THIS IS DESTINY, PEOPLE!!

Any Giants’ fan will be the first to tell you Brandon Jacobs wasn’t in the lineup when we lost to the Eagles in week 14.  Not only will he be in the lineup on Sunday - he’ll be coming off several weeks’ rest.  Expect big things from the Beast.

That being said, the Gmen will have to throw everything they’ve got at the Eagles this weekend if they want to come away victorious.  We’ll need to have a dominant running game, and our D-line will need to get McNabb on the ground all game long.  The defense has plenty of film to watch to prepare.  I doubt if there will be many situations where Pierce finds himself one-on-one having to chase down Brian Westbrook.  The receivers will have to step up and make big plays when their numbers are called (like making the fourth down catch with a little over a minute left in the first half).  Eli knows how to take care of himself come playoff time – I think he’ll be just fine.

There is a great positive that I feel comes out of our upcoming game against the Eagles.  It’s the playoffs, and once again all the experts are jumping off the Giants’ bandwagon.  Despite what Vegas’s spread is (last I checked I think we were giving four and a half), all I’m hearing from the sports talkers is that the Giants are in huge trouble when the Eagles come to town, and how the Eagles went 3-1 in their last four games of the regular season, while the Giants were a troubling 1-3 during the same stretch.

So what?!?!  Three of those losses came without Jacobs in the lineup, and the third came on a miraculous last-second field goal AGAINST OUR BACKUPS.  Let everyone believe the hype.  Good for them.  Give us more of a reason to have a chip on our shoulder.  Whenever the experts pick us to lose, we win.  So far, everything’s going according to plan.

As a football fan, you really couldn’t write a better script.  The Giants’ first playoff appearance after a very impressive regular season following one of the most historic Super Bowl runs in history, going up against their arch-rivals who appear to be trying out the same formula we used last year (late-season-heroics).  WOWSAS.

I mean it’s the Eagles!!  We HATE the Eagles.  More than the Cowboys and the Redskins and Hitler combined.  Of course we hate the Redskins and Cowboys, but we hate the Eagles more.  A lot more.  The Redskins and Cowboys have each other to hate the most, and we have the Philadelphia Eagles.  They actually infiltrated my home state (Jersey) and made its southern tip part of their fan base.  You know who else occupied territories?  The Nazis.  (Hey, I’m just sayin’.)

Okay, enough of all the shenanigans.  I obviously don’t actually consider the Eagles to be like the Nazis, so if there are easily-angered Eagles fans out there reading this, please don’t send me angry e-mails.  They’re not at all like the Nazis – at least the Nazis were well-organized!  BAAAA-ZING!! (Okay I’m done – for real this time.)

If there are fans who would like to me comments, please do at gmensuperfan@gmail.com.  Seriously – those e-mails get me so psyched up for the games!  Speaking of which, I’m back on the east coast until Monday and will be at the stadium this Sunday, so send me a note if you’re going to be there as well (not to be braggadocious, but I consider myself an awesome tailgater).  Get ready, sports fans!  This is going to be one hell of a game!  Until next week, GO GMEN!!
